Worked example: what does a €3,000 winning bid really cost?

Business customer, online bid, standard VAT, pickup within the free period:

Vehicle won for €3,000 (net)

  • Vehicle price (winning bid)€3,000.00
  • Buyer fee (tier €3,000–€3,499.99)€350.00
  • Virtual Bid Fee€18.00
  • Lot retrieval fee€45.00
  • 19% VAT on fees (€413.00)€78.47
  • 19% VAT on vehicle price€570.00
  • Total amount€4,061.47

The fees alone come to €413 net — around 14% of the winning bid, before VAT and transport. Under the §25a margin scheme the separately shown VAT on the vehicle price does not apply; the fees increase by the included VAT to €491.47, for a total of €3,491.47 — with no input tax deduction possible.

Copart Germany fees in detail

Buyer fee (Member Fee). By far the largest cost item. It is tiered in over 40 steps by sale price: from €1 net on very small amounts, €350 on a €3,000 vehicle, up to €760 in the €12,500–€14,999.99 tier. From €15,000 a flat 5% applies — with no cap. A €30,000 winning bid alone means €1,500 in buyer fees net.

Virtual Bid Fee. Only charged when your winning bid was placed online on copart.de during the live auction: €18 up to a €6,750.99 sale price, €25 up to €13,500.99, €31 above that (net). Bidding at the on-site kiosk avoids this fee.

Lot retrieval fee. A flat €45 net per vehicle, regardless of condition. It covers preparing the vehicle for pickup.

VAT. For business customers all auction prices are net; 19% VAT is added on fees and — under standard taxation — on the vehicle price. Under margin taxation (§25a UStG) the net fee values increase by the statutory VAT, but it may not be shown separately and no input tax deduction is possible. For private customers Copart shows all prices and fees gross.

Deadlines. Payment is due immediately; after 3 business days including the invoicing date, Copart charges a €50 late payment fee. Pickup is free for 5 business days including auction day, then €15 per day per vehicle. If a vehicle is not paid for and gets relisted, 10% of the sale price applies, minimum €500. Important for volume buyers: your bid limit is only released again after full payment.
